Another change of plans

Do the quilts you make change as you go along? Mine seem to. I don't necessarily think that's a bad think...but it does complicate life sometimes. The more I looked at the barn blocks with the four patch blocks, the more I thought the layout was too simple. Now I love a simple quilt, but sometimes I think I go for simple just to get something done, and I didn't want to do that with the barns.  So I thought a bit and today it went from this...

...to this. What do you think...is it better or worse with the X blocks instead of the plain four patch blocks? I've still got 40 border blocks to make, and I think those will help pull the whole thing together. And these blocks are just laid out on the design wall...I still have a lot of sewing to do to get them put together.

  1. I actually prefer the 4-patches as they surround the barn blocks and display them. The other one tends to lead my eye away from the barns.

  2. you know, I thought I would like the X blocks but looking at both pictures, I agree with Debi. The 4 patches make my eyes rest. The X blocks have them jump all over.

  6. Probably not what you want to hear, Terry, after all the work of making those X-blocks, but sometimes things just don't do what we think they will do. I like the simple frame the 4-patches provided for those beautiful barns. It seems that the X-blocks compete with the barns for attention and they are no longer the focal point of the quilt. Sorry! : (

  10. At first I liked the X blocks best because the dark brown four patch seemed heavy to the more delicate barns. Then I went back to the four patch because the majority of the comments liked the four patch.

The arrangement of the dark/light blocks need to be consistent like the second row. Dark blocks placed all in the same manner to create a diagonal line. It creates movement instead of all jumble.

Hope this makes sense. I like them both now.

  11. I like the 4 patch best. The x block seems to draw my eye and I focus on them more than the barns. The 4patch really sets the Barnes off. Nola

  12. I like the 4-patch. I think my eye is drawn to the barn blocks better in the 4-patch format. In the x block format my eye keeps focusing on the x blocks more than the barn blocks.

  13. I like the X's reminds me of a road travelled and you pass the barns. Just for me the four blocks look too cramped with the barns when you compare it to the X's :)

  14. The 4-patch is more restful to my eye. Right now it probably is looking to plain to your eyes, but when it is completed, it won' t be so plain with all the quilting, etc. If you added a border with a simple design, that would give it more interest. I think that is what you are trying to accomplish?

  16. I agree with Sew Surprising. The first thing I thought of was roads. They lead nicely from one barn to another.
