Nest watch

I went out with my camera yesterday to check on another robin's nest I had found. Here's momma robin on the nest...

And here are her babies with one egg left to hatch out. I know some people think the little ones are ugly when they look like this, but I just love them! LOL

We had a mourning dove build a nest in the end of our downspouts. I do worry that if it rains really hard, the nest could get flooded. Mourning dove nests are very flimsy.

And here is another momma robin on the nest I showed you the other day. She wasn't moving off the nest the day I took this picture, but later when I checked there were babies instead of eggs! It's raining today, so I won't bother her. But if it's sunny tomorrow I'll have to go and peek at them! :0)

Gift Horse

So you've all probably heard the old saying, "Never look a gift horse in the mouth." Really it sounds odd, but basically it means if someone does something for you or gives you something, you thank them and appreciate it. Well, I don't think my daughter has heard that saying. Either that or she's just very particular. Or maybe both. After I made the little zip pouches for her and her friend, both of them had complaints about them. Neither liked the bigger zippers, and Emily said hers was too big. It literally was a quarter inch longer than her old one...they were made from the same pattern! LOL So yesterday I got two new zippers and some different fabric and tonight I made two new ones. They're going to like these or they're going to do without! LOL

And now I can show you the last PIF I made, since it's arrived at its new home. I made this for Kate, and I'm happy to say she loved it!

Little Zip Pouches

In August of last year I made Emily a little zip pouch to attach to the lanyard she keeps her keys on. She loved it and has used it to keep her driver's license, money, etc. in. Well, she recently told me she wanted a new one. She wanted black, but we ended up with a dark blue batik. And then I found out her best friend wanted one to match. So this morning I sat down and made the girls their zip pouches. I'm still not very good at these, but I think the girls will be happy. Next time I'll get zippers with smaller teeth sewing machine didn't like the ones on these zippers. But they're done and that's all that matters. Until next time! LOL

If you're interested in making some of these for yourself, you can find the tutorial HERE.

It's a candle mat

I got my four paper pieced blocks sewn together today, and made them into this little candle mat. I even pieced the back, which used up nine more of the leftover charm squares. I really love these colors and can't wait to start cutting up the jelly roll strips for the next quilt on my list. :0)

Simple Paper Piecing

I've been tempted for some time now to give paper piecing a try. I saw a Beginners BOM on Janeen's blog a while back, and decided to finally attempt it. Today I pulled out some Pure charm squares I had left over from another project, printed off the pattern, and away I went. I'd love to say all went well, but not so much. The first block I had the middle fabric off a bit and was left with a hole in my block. I can't remember what I did wrong on the second one, but I'm happy to say my third attempt was a success! I made three more blocks after that, and now have the beginnings of a little candle mat. These blocks are just laid out together...hopefully I can get back to my sewing tomorrow.

I also got brave earlier and printed off a pineapple block pattern to try next. This block had five pieces...the pineapple block has 29! I wonder how many times I can mess that one up before I get it right? LOL

More signs of spring

It's great to finally be seeing some color in the yard. The daffodils are so pretty right now! And yesterday I found the first robin's nest of the season! Well, I did see another one when the robins were building it, but it's about 20 feet up in the maple tree. I won't be watching those eggs hatch! LOL

A new project

But this one isn't going to be scrappy! LOL I found the free pattern for this quilt the other day. It's called Mixed Bag and you can find it HERE. I was looking for something that used a jelly roll and this is perfect for that. Mine will look quite a bit different as I have a jelly roll of Pure from Moda that I want to use up. Mine will be in soft blues, browns and creams. I hope to get started on the cutting later today. :0)

Here's the jelly roll of Pure. I just love those colors! :0)

Spring is in the air

Actually, spring is in the pond! LOL It's finally gotten warm enough for me to take the heater out of the pond, and to put the filter and pump back in. I don't have the waterfall set up yet, but at least the water is circulating now. And the frogs have come out of hiding as well. The first picture is big froggy...when he's sitting like this, he's as big as your hand!

This is little froggy...he's only an inch and a half long or so when he's sitting.

And here are our three fish. I was glad they all survived the winter.

This is our cat. His name is Kitty. He was just waiting for me to finish taking pictures so I'd sit down and pet him! LOL

And here's a note to Sheila came up as a no-reply blogger so I couldn't reply to your comment on my last post. I used raw edge applique to attach the little squares to my snowball blocks. I just lined them up, measured to be sure they were close to even, and then stitched about an eighth of an inch inside each block. Easy peasy! :0)

It's a quilt! :0)

I finally got the binding on my snowball quilt yesterday, and got it washed and dried. Now it's all snuggly and soft and ready to used. :0)

Just a note about the linky thing on my sidebar...suddenly I'm getting spam links on it. If they continue, I'll do away with the linky thing. It's nice to have links to everyone's blocks, but it's just one more thing for me to remember to check it for spam all the time. It's just a shame people have to mess with things that have nothing to do with them. They take the fun out of everything. :0/

Snowballs for April

Well, here we are already at the third month of the sew-along. I know a lot of you showed interest in making this quilt back before we started, but there have been only a few of you using the linky thing on my sidebar. If you're sewing along at all, even if you're behind, feel free to link up to you blog posts so we can see your progress.

This month you'll once again make nine snowball blocks and nine nine-patch blocks. If you're following the sew-along, then at the end of this month you ought to have 27 nine-patch blocks and 27 snowball blocks made. If you want to sew them together as you go along, that's fine. I sewed mine into four patch blocks as I went along, which made laying the blocks out in the end much easier and quicker, with less sewing left until the end.

Here's a peek at my quilt, just back from the Joanne last week. I love the little butterflies she quilted on this one! I had hoped to have the binding on and have it finished by now, but that hasn't happened. Hopefully I can work on it tomorrow.
