Christmas cactus

When I was going through my batiks to cut them into 2-1/2 inch squares, I found a piece of fabric that I just couldn't cut into. I loved it just the way it was. So I ended up attaching it to a piece of background fabric with batting behind it and I framed it. It reminds me of the ocean.

When I moved into my apartment, I ended up giving most of my houseplants to my mom. They all love it at her house and are doing very well. I did keep one of my Christmas cactus and it's in bloom now. This one is so pretty! :0)

A stocking to stuff

This is Ava's second Christmas, but last year she was too young to know that I hadn't gotten her a Christmas stocking made yet. I got busy this week and that has now been remedied. She has a stocking that will be used for many years to come.

I was looking through some photos on my computer the other day and of course many of them were taken at the house we used to live in. Sometimes the memories of our years there make me smile and other times they make me sad. I miss so many things about living there, but it was definitely time to move on and start a new chapter in my life and I'm totally OK with that.

One new thing is my little Christmas tree. I got this alpine tree last year, and decorated it all in turquoise blue, silver and white...all new things for my new start. This year I pulled out my old ornaments and went with all red and green for my tree and I love it. It's nice to see some of my old ornaments too. The angel on the top and many of the ornaments were made by my mom over the years. I'd like to say Ava helped me decorate the tree, but she was taking off the ornaments as fast as I was putting them on. lol

I took the time this week to put together a little shadow box for Ava showing off some of the seashells she picked up at the beach in October, as well as a few pictures of her at the beach. I'm sure when she's older she'll appreciate it much more than she does now. But for the time being I can look at it and smile every time I see it and remember how much she loved the sand and the water.

T-shirts and batiks

I recently agreed to make a t-shirt quilt for a friend of mine for her daughter. This is the top which has been sent to Joanne for quilting. Not the best picture but I had to snap it quickly before Ava attacked the quilt top again!

I've been wanting to make a batik quilt for some time now. I had decided about a year ago I wanted to make a blue and green batik quilt. But when I got out my tub of batiks I realized I had a lot of smaller pieces that were neither blue nor green. So I decided to first make a scrappy nine patch quilt with all the odds and ends of batiks I have. Then maybe after that I'll finally get around to making a blue and green batik quilt. The pile of squares on the right has doubled in size. Now I need to get busy and get some of the background fabric cut so I can sew whenever I have a minute or two.

Getting my mojo back

Believe it or not I have been doing a bit of sewing. I recently made a cat mat for a friend to put on the table where her cats like to sit and look out the window. The one side (seen below) is plain black and the other side is a black print. My friend plans to flip it back and forth every month, as cats need variety! lol As you can see it has been cat tested and cat approved! :0)

I recently volunteered to make a t-shirt quilt for a friend of mine for her daughter. The shirts have been prepared and last week we went shopping for the fabric for the sashing, cornerstones and binding. Now I just have to find time to cut some fabric and I can get this one sewn together.

I've been on a fabric diet for years now, only buying fabric that I needed for a specific project. Well, a few months back this piece of octopus fabric came home with me. I have no idea what I'll do with it...maybe make a bag or something. But I just had to have it.

Our Week Away

We recently spent a week on the beautiful Gulf coast of Florida. It's so peaceful and relaxing there.

The first night Ava was a bit uncertain about the water. I think the waves scared her a bit. But after that first night she ran straight for the water every time we went to the beach.

We had to keep an eye out for jellyfish. They were washed up on the beach and were in the water too. It was definitely not something any of us wanted to step on.

Ava's other favorite pastime besides playing in the water was playing in the seashells. She would have sat like that all day if we had let her.

And of course there were so many beautiful seabirds all over the beach. This heron was just one that let me take its picture.

Here's one of the many beautiful sunsets we got to see during the week. If you look to the left of the pier you can see the band of rain that had already passed over us earlier.

We were fortunate enough to have an outdoor shower where we were staying. They had a lower faucet too for just washing off your feet, and it became Ava's favorite thing at the condo. We started calling her the faucet hog because she'd never let any of us in to wash our feet off! lol

One project done

I got Ava's birth sampler stitchery done in the nick of time. She'll be one year old next week and I promised myself I'd have it finished before her first birthday.

This is the rose I dug and brought with me when I moved. I kept it in the house all winter and it's doing great on the patio this summer.

I have a pot of wildflowers I planted from seed, and I bought the lavender to go in the pot when the wildflowers were done blooming. But they haven't stopped yet so the lavender is still sitting there. It sure does look pretty though and it smells so good.

At the old house I had a water garden with fish in it. This is a much smaller water feature but it's so much easier to take care of. It sounds so pretty and Ava loves to put her hands in the water.

Finally some stitching

Would you believe that I'm actually doing some stitching? Before Ava was born, I told Emily that I would stitch a birth announcement for her. Well, one thing led to another and after she was born I just never got around to it. Last week I got it traced and backed and started stitching! I have a ways to go, but her birthday isn't for three weeks so that gives me lots of time, right? lol

This morning Ava and I had some errands to run. I got dressed then got her dressed. As we were getting ready to leave, I suddenly realized our outfits matched! She was wearing plaid and I was wearing stripes, but the colors were all the same. I couldn't have planned it better if I had tried! lol

A Glowing Good Time

Every year I go to a nearby balloon festival to watch the balloons fly. This year they had a contest to win tickets to the balloon glow they do in the evenings, and I won! So Saturday night I headed out and had the best time. The balloons were literally only 10 feet in front of me, and it was so great to sit there and relax and watch them inflate and then glow once it got dark. The colors were just amazing! I hope I get the chance to do it again next year. :0)

Mother's Day fun

I know Mother's Day was weeks ago, but I'm just now getting a chance to sort out pictures. Brian was over and decided to put batteries in every toy that Ava had that could make noise. Thankfully the one toy had a wiring problem because even with new batteries it wouldn't work! lol

Then Brian was trying to show Ava how to walk behind her new push toy. He tried to show her how to crawl one time too but she wasn't too impressed.

She was impressed however when he took her out and showed her how to play in my water fountain. I wasn't so happy about it. I'll have a job keeping her out of it this summer.

The other day I got the rocking cow out of the garage and gave it a good washing so Ava could play with it. My kids played on it when they were little, so it's kind of cool that Ava is playing with it now.

Today Ava's cousin from Connecticut came by with her mom and dad. Sarah is only about two months older than Ava is and the two girls got along great.

Ava at nine months

Miss Ava turned 9 months old today. She's been pulling herself up and when she's in her crib that's not a good thing. So we lowered her mattress now and she'll be safe even if she is standing up in there. Which she does every morning until I get her out of bed.

Ava normally sits in her stroller when I take my shower. This morning she got quiet all of a sudden and when I peeked out at her, she was sound asleep! It's the first time she's done that. She only slept about 20 minutes but any time she's sleeping is a good time.

I bought this rose the year before last and when it was time for me to move, it's the only thing out of all my flowerbeds that I brought with me. It nearly died but eventually last year it came back and had a few blooms. I kept it in the house over the winter and now it's back outside and blooming again. The only strange thing is that when I bought this, it was pink. Now it's a pretty coral color.

That's about all for now. No sewing lately but I do need to start embroidering a birth sampler for Ava. I figure I'm OK as long as it's done by her first birthday, right? lol

Our holiday at the beach

The first week of April was spent with my two favorite girls at my favorite beach. We had great weather and the beach was beautiful as always. It honestly was the best vacation ever.

The cottage we stayed in was literally right across the street from the beach. It was so cool to be able to look out our front windows and see the waves on the gulf. This is my Jeep parked at the cottage we stayed in and behind it you can see Cortez beach and the Gulf of Mexico.

Of course there were lots of sea birds at the beach. I especially like this pic of the seagulls with the water behind them. It was a rather blustery day so they had their heads hidden away. I got to see pelicans diving for fish too.

I went for a short walk the one evening and saw this guy perching on a post. I love pelicans!

The waves were beautiful all week. We had a lot of wind so the waves were pretty big for the gulf. Our last day there I even saw some surfers out trying to catch a wave.

Ava loved the water, except when a big wave came in and surprised her.

She also loved sitting and playing in the wet sand. Unfortunately every time we looked away for a second she tried to eat it too! lol

We had beautiful sunsets every night.

This was our last morning right before we left to head back home It's the only picture we got of me and Ava together. It's definitely one of my favorites.

And this is the only picture we managed to get of the three of us together....our shadows on the pier.

Coming home we had a lot of stop and start traffic to deal with. The first day was supposed to be a 7 hour drive and it turned into 10-1/2 hours. Same with the second day. Thankfully the last day traffic wasn't an issue and we got home right on time as planned. One of the traffic slowdowns on day two was due to these hot air balloons tethered beside the highway.

I have to say I was a bit concerned about travelling so far with a seven month old baby, but all in all it went really well. We did have some minor issues with Ava but even those were worth it when we got to spend a week at the beach. Now we can start planning for next time! :0)
